Cite Your Sources

In academic writing you should always cite your sources properly. This allows others to easily find the same information source later. There are several different styles for citing sources. Most of the time at this school we use MLA format for citations. The links below will help you create your citations properly. You may want to use Noodletools to generate the citations for you.

Tips for Searching

There are ways to make your online searching more efficient and succesful. Some of the things you can do are:

*Use only nouns, not full sentences. Make a list of different synonyms for what you are looking for. Try them all.

*Put a phrase in quotes. A search on Medical and Ethics will return all pages with either word; a search on "Medical Ethics" will return only those pages with that exact phrase.

*Most results pages offer you a chance to sort or refine your results to a certain date or time period - "Last 30 days", "Last year", etc.

Task

Scientific discoveries are happening every day.   In order to stay up-to-date, medical professionals must keep up with the current literature.  To prepare for this, students will be required to submit current event articles on a bi-weekly basis.  These will be part of your homework grade. See the box to the right for assignment due dates and topics.

Your summary of the article should follow the format of the "Current Events Assignment Form" in the black "Handouts" box to the right. You do not need to use the actual form, but your report should follow its format and must be typewritten. All of the information prompted on the form should be in your report. A copy of the current event article needs to be attached to your report. See the blue "Cite Your Sources" box on the left for help creating the article citation.

To locate information sources which report on health/medical science topics appropriate for this class, see the green  boxes below and to the right. You can use any of the sources listed provided that the article has been written within the last 6 months.
